Canadian and World Studies

Welcome to Canadian and World Studies at Earl of March.

The CWS courses provide students the best opportunity to learn a variety of transferable skills including how to:

  • Research
  • Develop an argument
  • Spot fake news
  • Analyse sources

The CWS department at Earl has some of the most engaging, innovative, entertaining teachers in the board. These are not your traditional copy-notes-all-day-long lessons. The department uses real world examples, role playing simulations, field trips and hands-on experiences to allow students to explore the content in many different ways.

There are several senior elective options that can help prepare students for their post-secondary options whether that is in the Humanities or in the Science and Engineering fields.

These include three History options:

  • Ancient Civilizations covers every king, ruler, major architecture and war for a 10,000 year period.
  • American History covers everything in the USA from pre-revolutionary war to Reagan.
  • World History fills the gap between Ancient Civ. and the Grade 10 course covering the Renaissance, French Revolution, Industrial Revolution, Russian Revolution and much more.

ADDITIONAL PLACEMENT: Both American History and World History can be taken as AP credits allowing students to earn a university credit by completing an additional exam.

Non-History electives include:

  • Natural Disasters: hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanos and more.
  • Politics covers democracies, authoritarian states, and everything in between.
  • Economics covers globalization and the economy, a mix of business and politics.
  • World Issues covers current events and situations building an understanding of the world.
  • Law has a grade 11 and 12 option that perfect for future lawyers, or those interested in legal dramas.

These courses all provide students interested in pursuing the humanities a real leg up when entering university. Former students regularly comment on how much better prepared they are at university than their classmates from different schools.
