Our school’s Multicultural Liaison Officers (MLOs) support newcomer students and families with settlement services, navigating the school system, language interpretation, and more.
The Multicultural Liaison Officer (MLO) program provides support in multiple languages for students and families who are newcomers and refugees. The Multicultural Liaison Officers work with school staff to welcome newcomer families and connect them with important services, resources, and supports within our school and in the local community.
Amy Yan and Fatimah Ekbal are the Multicultural Liaisons Officers at our school. They are here to support families with:

Amy speaks Mandarin, Cantonese and English and can also help you access support in other languages.
Amy has been with OCISO since 2019. Amy loves diverse teams, working with children, youth and families.
Before joining OCISO, Amy worked as an employment counsellor and community youth worker in Ottawa for 6 years. Amy has an advanced diploma in Child and Youth Care from Algonquin.
In their free time, Amy enjoys swimming, gardening, and serving the community. Amy believes that “work in a spirit of service is the highest form of worship.”

Fatimah speaks Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi, and a bit of Farsi and can also help you access support in other languages.
Fatimah has been with OCISO since 2005. Fatimah loves helping students reach their goals as well as being a translator for the parents.
Before joining OCISO, Fatimah worked as a Medical technologist in the USA for 12 years. Fatimah has a MSc in Biology.
In their free time, Fatimah enjoys gardening, hiking, and doing arts and crafts.
